hoof fyi

My name is Steve Garvin, the inventor of ISP (Garvin's ISP Ointment.) for the past 28 years, I have been working with horses and specifically, the various problems of the hoof.

The hoof is a complex structure that actually requires
very little care and maintenance to stay healthy and strong.

  1. the first step to a healthy hoof is a nutritionally sound diet.
  2. The second step is correct trimming and shoeing techniques.
  3. The third step is routine, conscientious hoof care and maintenance with ISP.

The hoof requires 4 elements to remain healthy & strong:
• carbon • hydrogen • oxygen • nitrogen

These are necessary to make up amino acids or hoof protein. Hoof protein or keratin (hoof wall) contains the two amino acids, cystine and methionine. Sulfur is also necessary because the amino acids are joined into protein molecules by sulfur bonds. ISP is made with an organic substance, consisting of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons, sulfur, and iodine. These ingredients supply the hoof with the most important required elements. A simple maintenance program with ISP will make the hoof wall strong and flexible. there are two visual tests that will tell you when to apply ISP.

* Look at the coronary band (located at the top of the hoof wall, below the hairline.)
  1. If the coronary band is dry or appears to be flaking or peeling... or
  2. If the coronary band is wet and looks white and resembles your hands when they have been in water too long...
thoroughly massage in ISP, starting at the coronary band & covering the entire hoof wall.

PASTURE & STALL CONDITIONS affect hoof health:
Under normal pasture or stall conditions, a routine application of ISP every other day will restore, condition, hydrate and rejuvinate your horse's hooves. If the stall is excessively dry or wet, you will need to apply ISP daily.

CRACKS or DAMAGE in or right below coronary band: Check the bottom (sole) of hoof for an injury. If an injury is found, contact your vet or farrier immediately to remove the damaged tissue (pare our the sole) and pack with ISP. For cracks or damage to the hoof wall, apply ISP daily. Use some type of protective wrap or boot, as recommended by your vet or farrier.

NAIL HOLES: After resets, always fill old nail holes with ISP. In the event of a close nail, hot nail, or quick, pull the nail and pack ISP from the bottom until it comes out the nail hole in the side of the hoof.
